David Button LRPS

David Button died on 31 July at his home in Yelverton, near
Norwich, aged 80. He had been a member of the Norwich &
District Photographic Society since 1980. He was Chairman in
1987-88 and again in 1991-93. He became President in 1994-96
and was elected an Honorary Life Member in 1998. In 2005 he
was given the Society's Centenary Award for outstanding
service to the Society.
However, this bare recital does not adequately convey
David's contribution to NDPS. He was the leader and prime
mover of a small group of audio-visual enthusiasts. A/V
evenings were looked forward to with some interest by all
members, not least for the 'hiccups' caused by malfunctions of
equipment, but David was always at hand to put things right
with his customary good humour. His own sequences were
exemplary; he had gained his LRPS in this field in 1990. He
enjoyed print work, especially abstracts, and he adopted
digital work with enthusiasm. He was one of the first members
to produce prints direct from a digital camera. He was editor
and producer of 'Focus'. the Society's News Letter. He
organised and led trips to overseas destinations (Rouen,
Paris, Bruges, and Koblenz) and to several locations in
Britain.
But above all stands his book, published in 2003, some 130
pages of text and illustrated with colour photographs,
entitled 'WHEN FOUND, MAKE A NOTE The History of Norwich and
District Photographic Society 1903-2003'. David spent many
hours reading the Society's numerous Minute Books and other
documents and ephemera in the County Record Office and he
sought out current members who could add their own
reminiscences. The research and the writing up of all this was
a Herculean task but it was an undertaking which gave him
great satisfaction. The History will be his memorial in NDPS.
He leaves behind a wife and two sons with families. He will
be greatly missed by them and by the Society which he had
served with such distinction.
Norman Carmichael, August 2005.
